UPS Triggered Port Shedding

Genoa PCM is proud to present network switch port shedding. Working with Juniper Networks and their AI Mist we can facilitate the integration between their technology & an Eaton UPS.

The Technology

Juniper Networks offers a unique feature within their switches which allows ethernet ports to be to shed (disabled) based on API commands. This allows ports to be cycled or shut down based on secure API parameters hosted locally on the switch or remotely.

Runtime Extension - A Practical Application

In the event of a power failure a UPS will have a set runtime based on the load of attached equipment and the battery configuration. However with port shedding we are able to shut down PoE loads that are not critical to decrease the overall load and thereby increase the total runtime.

Runtime Extension - A Practical Application

In two recorded tests the Juniper switch was able to receive updates from the Eaton UPS while on battery and upon reaching certain battery percentages automatically decrease the PoE load via port shedding. This in turn increased the runtime of the UPS from 15 minutes to almost 23 minutes, a 144% growth in availability.
